A.R Rahman is a stunning example for working and delivering amidst immense criticism. There is not a single aspect of Rahman's music or working style that has not been criticized. The list of targets for the arrows of criticism are endless - his foot tapping music, long durations to complete a project, reserved and shy nature, trust and belief that GOD is the driving force, are a few to name.
A constant burden on Rahman's shoulders were the comparisons made between him and another giant in the music field, namely Illayaraja. But Rahman never cowed down to the criticism or considered him in any way lesser than Raja. Once when he was quizzed on who was the Lion and who was the Tiger – Rehman replied “That is for you to judge.” But Raja was not soft on criticizing Rahman. Once Raja quipped “When a disco dancer suddenly enters a cricket stadium, for few minutes everyone will focus on the dancer.” But the fact remains that the disco dancer has won the “Man of the Match” award.
During his initial days in the industry, when he planned to import sophisticated electronic equipments for music production, he faced a lot of problems from competition. Rahman has also mentioned how the food and water he consumed during his childhood days were affected by witchcraft.
And Rahman would have had the utmost anguish when a hero for whose movie he would have composed heart rendering music, criticizes his beliefs. Rahman was also asked about the “Casting Couch” as he introduces a lot of novice singers into the singing industry.
Now, Rahman has proved his worth in the Global Village. The Golden Globe Award for best music director award for the English movie “SlumDog Millionaire” is another feather in his cap.

Agreed! Rahman is truly talented! Even though I didn't really like Slumdog as a movie, I think Rahman did a fabulous job with the music. Whatsay?

ReplyDeleteYou know ani,I have noticed the same type of attitude in most of the muslim population(not exagerrating).Me, being in a muslim country,could note that most of them give credit of their well being to God and remain humble and simple.Since ARR is a convert,he must be a good muslim and no doubt he has such good characters.
Another great in par to ARR is Tendulkar.
